Late afternoon / sunset
Landmark
High midday, quieter at dusk
The harbor of Riomaggiore is not a beach in the traditional sense—it is a slipway carved into the rock, where brightly painted fishing boats are winched up and down by hand. This is the village’s living room, where locals gather to swim, fish, and watch the sunset.
30 min – 2 hours
Sit on the flat rocks to the left of the boat ramp. Order a Spritz from the bar above and watch the boats come in.
The Harbor (Marina)
Best experienced in the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the day-trippers have left.

The churchyard offers one of the best views of the village rooftops. Come at midday when the light is directly overhead.
Church of San Giovanni Battista
The interior is cool and dark—a welcome refuge on a hot day. Notice the wooden crucifix, carved by a local artist.

The castle ruins sit at the highest point of the village, offering 360-degree views of the sea, the terraced hills, and the rooftops below. It was built to defend against Saracen pirates and now serves as a peaceful lookout.

This kilometer-long path carved into the cliffs connects Riomaggiore to Manarola. It has been closed for years due to rockfall damage, but portions may reopen. Check locally for current status.

Even when closed, the viewpoint at the Riomaggiore entrance is worth visiting. The tunnel entrance is a local gathering spot.
