Food
In a region where tourists flock to the most visible storefronts, the truly remarkable gelato often hides in plain sight-down a narrow alley, through a doorway that locals know by heart, or in a village that doesn’t make the top of anyone’s itinerary. Here are the five gelaterias that have earned our devotion.
1. Gelateria Centrale, Riomaggiore
Tucked into a corner of Via Colombo that most visitors walk right past, Gelateria Centrale makes everything fresh each morning. The lemon (limone) here is made with lemons from the terraces above the village, and you can taste the salt air in every bite. Ask for the crema di limone-it’s not on the display, but they’ll make it if you ask nicely.
Marco Bianchi
The best gelato in Cinque Terre isn’t about exotic flavors. It’s about tasting the place itself-the lemons from the terraces, the hazelnuts from the hills, the simplicity that comes from doing one thing perfectly.
2. Il Porticciolo Gelateria, Manarola
This tiny spot near the harbor serves what might be the best pistachio gelato on the entire Ligurian coast. The owner sources pistachios directly from Bronte, Sicily, and you can taste the difference. The texture is impossibly creamy, the color is naturally green (not the neon green of artificial flavoring), and the taste lingers long after the cone is gone.
3. Gelateria 5 Terre, Monterosso
While Monterosso has no shortage of gelato options, this family-run shop on the edge of the old town consistently outperforms its competitors. Their specialty is the Sciacchetra flavor-gelato made with the local dessert wine. It’s sweet, complex, and utterly unique to this stretch of coast.
4. Alberto Gelateria, Vernazza
Alberto has been making gelato in Vernazza for over forty years. His shop is easy to miss-there’s no flashy signage, just a small doorway that opens onto the piazza. Try the nocciola (hazelnut), made with nuts from the Piedmont hills. It’s worth the extra euro for a double scoop.
5. The Secret Spot, Corniglia
We’re not going to name this one-if you find it, you’ll understand why. It’s at the top of the village, past the main square, in a building that doesn’t look like a gelateria at all. The woman who runs it only makes three flavors each day, based on what’s fresh. Trust her judgment.
Watch how the server scoops. If they use a paddle (spatola) and the gelato folds softly, it’s the real deal. If it’s scooped like ice cream, keep walking.
The Spatula Test
The best gelato is made fresh each morning. Visit before 3 PM for the optimal texture and flavor.
